Harry’s ad illustrations for Lifebuoy soap represent one of his most memorable ad series. The Lifebuoy ads are unusual in that they are in comic style. However, given his body of prior ad work and his story illustration style, the comic style wasn’t a great stretch for Timmins. Albert Dorne began the Lifebuoy comic series, with the first ad published in 1931. Although Dorne continued to create some Lifebuoy material through 1934, Timmins largely took over beginning in the summer of 1932. The ads appeared in most of the women’s monthlies (Woman’s Home Companion, Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s, Pictorial Review etc.), often on the inside front or back cover. They also ran in newspapers, including in the Sunday comic section. A few early ones ran in The Saturday Evening Post and Collier’s. Initially, Timmins was given prominent attribution in the ads. Later the attribution was dropped. To date, I’ve found about 70 Lifebuoy ads done by Timmins. A good sampling is below – I hope you enjoy these as much as I do!
