Timmins illustrated twelve stories for Pictorial Review in 1931 and 1932 – and half of those were for the serial Red Shadow. Generally forgotten today, Pictorial Review (PR) was a major women’s magazine during the period, with peak English circulation surpassing 2.5 million (there was a Spanish edition also). The magazine merged with The Delineator in 1937, and then ceased publication in 1939. Given Harry’s paucity of work for PR, I imagine that early in the Great Depression, he took whatever assignments came his way. Once his position with Crowell-Collier’s (and Lifebuoy) solidified, I imagine he let go of the PR work. Unfortunately, we cannot ask Harry questions such as these! Below are three examples of Harry’s work for PR. I have removed story text for a cleaner appearance.
