This Week 1: 1935-38

This Week began life as a Sunday magazine insert in the New York Herald Tribune newspaper.  In February 1935, the magazine’s name was changed to This Week, and the magazine began syndication to other major newspapers.  Initial US circulation was approximately 4 million; circulation peaked at 14+ million in the early 1960’s.  The magazine ceased publication in 1969.  Perhaps because it was launched during the Great Depression, This Week attracted top writing and illustration talent from its inception despite being a newsprint product.

Harry Timmins was one such early recruit – his first illustration appeared in June 1935.  Using newspapers.com to conduct research, I’ve identified a total of 42 This Week stories that Timmins illustrated between 1935 and 1946.  Below is a sample of Harry’s work during 1935 to 1938.  Original magazine scans are provided in color; newspapers.com scans in black and white.  Story text has been removed for a cleaner presentation.
